Old Harbor Cottage
Old Harbor Cottage
Overview
This vacation rental cottage, just newly built on the water’s edge offers upclose and personal views of Vinalhaven’s famous lobster industry. Many local lobstermen moor their boats in the harbor giving you the opportunity to get to know your year-round neighbors by buying your lobsters fresh, and I mean fresh, off the boat. The view down The Reach, where the ferry boat travels down to Carver’s Harbor and the ferry terminal is also traveled heavily by many lobstermen. They are early risers and off to haul traps before sunrise.
The cottage has an open floor plan in the living area with cathedral ceiling, lots of windows from which to watch the activities in the harbor, but the large deck out front brings you that much closer to the action. The spacious kitchen area has an eating area just inside the sliding glass door and there is another dining table in the other corner either for dining or playing games. The living room area is decorated with vintage Maine camp furniture: comfy and rugged. Light bamboo flooring brings a cheerful glow to the entire space.
There are two bedrooms, one has a full bed, the other 2 twin beds. There is a full bath, a laundry closet with stacked washer and dryer.

Farmhouse on Granite Island
Waterfront Farmhouse on Granite Island
Overview
The panoramic view of Hurricane Sound from the point of land this vacation rental house sits on is unbelievable! You can watch the daily lobstering up close, experience spectacular sunsets, relax on or explore the granite shoreline, and observe the sometimes quickly changing weather come in over the water.
The original house has pretty much been left intact, with some convenient modern amenities added, like indoor plumbing, modern kitchen appliances, and clothes dryer, but the old furnishings make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Whatever the house may lack in modern comforts, the location will help you overlook them. You’ll find yourself telling time by the ferry and tides rather than the clock on the lower right hand corner of your computer monitor.
The house is also just a short walk away from The Basin Trust Preserve, a privately owned property where you are invited to walk the trails and enjoy the tranquility of The Basin and its tidal falls. There is also a private sandy beach, a great spot for launching kayaks, digging mussels, or simply relaxing in the sun.

Home on Pease Cove
Waterfront Home on Pease Cove, Dyer’s Island
Overview
The continuing renovations on this sunny, waterfront vacation rental property on Pease Cove on Dyer’s Island, a small extension on the west side of Vinalhaven, have made it even more of a magical gem that you’ll never want to leave. It sits on two acres on the water looking southwest, down Hurricane Sound to Hurricane Island, where the tide change uncovers acres of tide pools filled with shells, colored glass and other treasures from the sea. The large lawn area and new cedar deck waits for kites, Frisbees or a peaceful nap by the sea as you watch the boats go by.
The waterfront has large, water rounded granite flows to sit on or explore; a great place to launch a kayak or canoe. There is a nice deck out front as well bordered with lots of native flowers and a small, private courtyard surrounded by the house, but open to the water. You can pick a pail full of fresh berries for your cereal or muffins in season. The cove is a haven for herons, fish hawks diving into the sea, bald eagles and a large variety of shore birds.
The Home
The eat-in kitchen is bright and cheery. The dining room is in the old, 1865 original part of the house. There is a new addition that has a master bedroom with a king size bed and a lofty living room with comfy furniture and a great view of the water out 2 large picture windows and sliding glass door. A hammock hangs from the ceiling for lazy afternoon snoozes and snuggles. There is another small bedroom on the first floor with a double iron bed, and two rooms upstairs, one with 2 twin beds and one with a king. The larger of the two upstairs rooms has two skylights for lots of added sunshine, but they can be shaded for those who want to sleep late in the morning.

Luxury Cabin on the Thorofare
Luxury Waterfront Cabin on the Thorofare
Overview
This cottage offers the best of both worlds for those who enjoy camping and like the comforts generally not associated with camping, like indoor plumbing and comfortable beds! It’s life, simplified. Located on the end of a long dirt driveway on the Thorofare, north of Vinalhaven island, this vacation rental house is very private and tranquil. The wood-paneled interior gives the place a warm, campy feel, and the amenities take the work out of camping. The great room on the first floor with kitchen, dining area, and living room has a wall of sliding glass doors offering a view that is nothing less than spectacular! The Thorofare passes right before the property, with a small island just off in front of the property. The view, on a clear day, looks over the Penobscot Bay to “Where the Mountains meet the Sea” in Camden on the mainland. The sunsets are indescribable. Bring your camera and your paints, lots of film and lots of paper; the scene changes before your eyes and rarely will you be disappointed.
The Cabin
The house has one bedroom on the main floor (with two twin beds) and another bedroom just a breezeway away (with a queen bed)—a most private get-away. There is also a loft with queen and full mattresses that children will love. A monitor heater will chase away the chill on foggy mornings, and the fireplace/woodstove is a great place to cozy up to in the evening with a nice glass of wine and the love of your life.
A pathway takes you down to the water’s edge where there is a dock and mooring available if you choose to arrive by boat. Like the rest of the Maine coast, there are rocks under the water, so approach carefully and heed the owner’s landmarks and headings. This property will delight the senses and restore your mind and soul. The house has Wi-Fi.
